Machine Details

As Designed, The
"X" Axis, Allows for a Full 49+ " of travel.
This lets you easily negotiate around a full 4 foot long panel.
The "Y"
Axis has a generous 30", while the "Z" offers a
very adequate 6.5". Many have Commented that the size of
this machine is Perfect for the Hobbiest. Yet, YOU can make
changes as you see fit !
At the time of your building the machine You must decide how much clearance you would prefer under the Gantry. One method allows for approximately 6" and the other method just over 10". The difference is, in the 6"scenario, the Main "Z" Axis Tooling Plate will be allowed to run right down to the Aluminum Table Top. A 2"Router bit hanging below your tool may only allow 4" of clearance above your parts.
By simply making the
Gantry Uprights 4" Higher, You can have
as much as 6" of clearance under a 4" Tool Bit !
The 6" wide "Z" Axis Tool plate will allow you to mount most any tool you can apply to this type of machine. Common items are Wood Routers, Drills, Pens, Rotating Knives, High Frequency Routers, Dispensing Nozzles, even Air Brushes ! Another Tooling Option gaining popularity is a "Hot Wire" setup for CNC Foam Cutting.
Consider These Additional Specifications:
Uses Precision Ground Cast Aluminum Plate
Commonly Available from Most Metal Suppliers.
Much
of this machines accuracy is accomplished by the use of
this Pre-Machined Plate.
This of course makes Building the machine Much Easier !!
Uses Extruded Aluminum Rail for Main Frame
and Stand.
The
Rigidity of the Aluminum Extrusions is just amazing. It
allows for a more accurate machine as well as allows you
to Instantly add additional components on to the machine
like Computer Monitor arms, Tool Changers and Dust
Collection Components. If however you are a really good
Steel Fabricator, Nothing stops you from using Steel
tubing for your Machine Stand.
Designed for Precision Rolled Lead Screws
and Anti-Backlash Nuts - Mounted in Double Row Angular
Contact Thrust Bearings.
I have
found the Precision Screws and Anti-Backlash nuts to be
"Above the Call of Duty" for this style of a
machine, Yet, you may use Ball Screws if You Like !
Designed to use Precision 1/2" and
3/4" Diameter Linear Rail with Adjustable, Open
Style 1/2" and 3/4" Linear Bearings.
Round
Linear Rail works very well for this application and its
companion Ball Bearing Slides are nothing short of
wonderful. Nothing stops one from using any of the other
popular bearing components like "Frelon",
"Rulon" or "Teflon" as the design is
based off of common industry standard components. You
could with a small amount of adjustment, apply THK style
Linear Components if you prefer.
Designed for Nema 34 Framed Motors - Step,
Servo or "Step-Servo".
With
the Plan set, I make "Recommendations" on Stepper
Electronic Components and PC Based Control. Again,
because the machine is built around Industry standard
components, you may desire to install a Full Servo
System. Nothing in the machines Mechanical Design would
limit you either way. You can ultimately use components
you may already have, or "take-out" and or
"Surplus" components.
A Quick search of E-Bay with the words "CNC",
"Stepper" or "Linear" Produces some Interesting
Results !
Precision Toothed Belt Drive for Simple
Adjustability when Matching your Electronic Components.
From
time to time, I have been questioned over using Toothed
Belts in my design. First off, Using Toothed Belts on
this Style of machine is NOT unusual. In fact,
because my machine is "LeadScrew" driven, I
place it ABOVE machines this size that use "Rack and
Pinion". Accuracy issues generated by "Belt
drive Gearing" generally do not come into play thru
the belt itself in most Gantry Style CNC Routers. If your
concern is with belts and accuracy, one needs to ask what
you are REALLY going to do with the machine.
Face it, If your planning on doing work for some Space
Telescope, you may want to eliminate my Belt
concepts..... But, for just about everything else, It
works just fine ! I routinely machine aluminum, cast iron
and have done some steel.
The reason I recommend sticking with the belt drive
is that with this machine, as sold as "Plans",
it is very hard to say just what one of my customers will
be using to control the machine, what motors and
amplifier/drivers and what Lead Screw "Pitch"
they will end up using. Believe me.... Many have found
the option of "Re-Gearing" to fit their needs a
Good Thing !
Chain Type Hose and Wire Carriages.
You
may have noticed that there is not a "Gaggle"
of Wires and hoses draping over the machine itself. I have listed the
Proper Components necessary to both Protect and Direct
the necessary cables and Hoses on this machine.
Electronic Recommendations for Accurate
Motion Control.
PC
based CNC Control has really gained momentum in the past
2 years. Much is available ranging from
"Freeware" to a Few Thousand Dollars. I make my
recommendations, yet, you are free to use what you
prefer.
The DATA-CUT CNC Router is a
well designed machine. It uses Precision Industry Standard
components and does not cut corners by using non conforming CNC /
Motion practices involving Angle Iron, Garage
Door Track and Cables or
Roller Skate Wheels.
Yet, You can MODIFY areas that
you would like to change. (Ah !!!
...... the beauty of PLANS !)
So, If you seriously
consider the Countless
Hours of Design Work, the Months of Trial and Error and the various Developmental Pains
One could
WILL encounter Designing and Building your own machine from
Scratch, THEN, You just
may recognize all of the Problems You will by using Plans developed and
proved in real world applications.
By using My Plans and Your spare time, You will be able to build a machine you have always wanted, with the components YOU FEEL are the best for your application.
